We look at the design of various types of furniture and furnishings, the interior architecture , as well as materials and techniques, plus some of the main designers. Menuiserie or Ebenisterie During the 16th century furniture was the province of the menuisier who worked in solid wood. The nearest English equivalent to the term is ‘carpenter and joiner’, but this is not entirely satisfactory. At this time the technique of inlaying, extremely fashionable in Italy, was in France the province of the menuisier, but when it was replaced by more sophisticated techniques such as veneering and marquetry in the early years of the 17th century, the most skilled menuisiers became known as ebenistes, a term often translated as ‘cabinet-maker’ which again is not strictly accurate. The menuisier proper continued to be responsible for seat-furniture, table-supports, such furniture as buffets a kind of cupboard and armoires wardrobes of solid wood, the decorative carved panelling for walls boiseries , door-cases and overdoor mouldings, and window-cases and shutters. In this he was assisted by wood-carvers, and by painters, varnishers, and gilders.
I already have some old office furniture, mainly Steelcase brand desks and a file cabinet, all dating to the early-to-mid ‘s. Like the machines, these steel furniture pieces strike me as being very well made, strong, and durable Adding Machine I own only one adding machine, a Remington key made in the ‘s. It uses a two-color ribbon. The machine has keys for subtracting, totaling, and sub-totaling, as well as a multiply key, which simply allows you to add a number over and over again.

Palm Springs and Mid-Century Modernism Mid-century modern room As early as the s, the Coachella Valley, and particularly Palm Springs, became known for the dry clear climate and mild warm winters which were so helpful to those recuperating from serious respiratory conditions. Wealthy people from all over the country, wishing to escape the winter snows and cold, soon began to value the area for relaxation and fun and as a place to enjoy the stark beauty and contrast of the scenic wonders the desert offered.
Soon the area became a get-away playground for the Hollywood elite and the stars created their own burgeoning movie colony here in the desert. The stars could stroll down the main streets and enjoy themselves in the restaurants and watering holes in relative comfort confident in being fairly anonymous. Because these homes were not the primary residences of the occupants, the owners felt that they had more freedom to take architectural risks in the designs.
The uniqueness of the desert landscape and environment and the luminous, rich, clear and strong light required an architecture that was sophisticated and understated — one that would blend with the spectacular austereness and palette of the desert. The desert was a blank canvas to the architect, open to creative and innovative approaches in new lines, angles, and textures that worked with the environment.
It inspired artists to work with, blending and contrasting, the natural materials in abundance around them. Dolly Faibyshev states in her book Palm Springs Mid-Century Modern, that Palm Springs has one of the largest concentrations of mid-century modern architecture in the country. Many of the most famous architects of the period were inspired by the desert environment. Quincy Jones, among many other notables, were able to envision, design and play with new and innovative architectural features.
The style emphasized creating structures with broad generous windows and open floor plans, all to the intention of opening up interior spaces and bringing the outside in. The novel post and beam design eliminated the need for heavy and bulky support walls in favor of walls that seemed to be made of glass.

Portable boxes for writing materials had existed for many centuries and in many cultures. However it was not until the last decades of the 18th century that the socio-economic circumstances in England necessitated the wide use of a portable desk in the form of a box which could be used on a table or on one’s lap. Although quality, ornament and form did play an important part in its selection as a personal item, it is the purpose for which it was used which gave prominence to the writing box, at a time of expanding intellectual curiosity, communication, literacy and increased commercial activity.
The writing box was an item of style and fashion yes, but it was also an item connected with intelligence, commerce and world awareness. From the end of the 18th, to the end of the 19th century, the writing box featured prominently on military expeditions, travels, libraries and in drawing rooms. Great literature as well as dispatches, contracts, letters and postcards were written on its sloping surface.
Through it both business and personal activity were transacted. Unlike the writing desk or table it was a personal and not a household possession. This box has accessories for both writing and dressing. It would have had everything a lady needed! Mahogany late 18th century writing box the top inlaid with maple inlay depicting a patera and edged with a cross banding in laburnum to the top.
The box has drop side handles and a side drawer for papers.
