Many men are attracted to women, and trans women are amongst these women. We, as a society, have not created a space for men to openly express their desire to be with trans women. We tell men to keep their attraction to trans women secret, to limit it to the internet, frame it as a passing fetish or transaction. Thousands of words have been dedicated to analyzing whether such and such famous man is now suspect, merely because he took a photo with a fan who happened to be a trans woman. This questioning has led many well-known men to adamantly defend their heterosexuality and has tarnished the reputation and careers of others. When a man can be shamed merely for interacting with a trans women — whether it be through a photograph, a sex tape or correspondences — what does this say about how society views trans women? More important, what does this do to trans women? This pervasive ideology says that trans women are shameful, that trans women are not worthy of being seen and that trans women must remain a secret — invisible and disposable.

When we expand violence data beyond hate crimes, it’s clear that trans men are targeted at comparable rates to trans women. By Loree Cook-Daniels July 23 4: Part of this invisibility problem stems from the current focus on just one aspect of violence against trans people: But there are other kinds of violence we need to be taking into account to get a full picture, including sexual assault, domestic violelnce, and stalking.
And data does, indeed, show that trans women of color are far more at risk of being murdered than other trans or LGB people. That study shows that transmasculine individuals were actually more likely to be victims of childhood sexual assault, adult sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking than were transfeminine individuals as shown in the chart below. The only category in which trans women were more likely to be victimized was by hate violence, and even there the difference was small: Sources of data that break out violence by gender identity are currently scarce.
While the overall attempted suicide rate for all the Injustice at Every Turn respondents was the commonly reported figure of 41 percent, for those who had experienced physical assault it rose to 61 percent. A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity by Julia Serano Whipping Girl explores trans issues, gender, and feminism mainly through the lens of trans women’s cultural experiences; however, many trans men will find Serano’s astute observations to be a breath of fresh air. Serano moves away from the popular format of trans tell-all, and instead breaks new ground by reconsidering popular and academic terminology around sex and gender, while hammering out new understandings of transgender identity in mainstream and feminist cultures.
She argues for the need for a cultural valuation of femininity– as well as all gender expressions as manifested in all types of bodies– in the struggle for human equality. Those who have been connected for many years to trans dialogues and community trends will probably find this book to be thought-provoking and ground-breaking.
The Riddle of Gender by Deborah Rudacille Rudacille’s book is a superbly written and well-researched exploration into issues around gender variance. She recounts the history of the study of transsexuality, from the early days of Magnus Hirschfeld’s clinic in Berlin, to Harry Benjamin’s practice in the United States, to university-based gender clinics, and on to the present. She even-handedly considers controversies around gender reassignment procedures, and entertains various theories that may explain gender variance.
She also touches on intersex conditions. Interspersed throughout the book are conversations with notable trans men and women, whose voices add depth and texture to her prose.
